Zum Spaß hielt jemand eine Probeabstimmung mit den Fahnen der beiden Parteien ab: In jedem Raum, in dem die eine Partei mehr Leute hatte als die andere, wurde ihre Fahne gehisst – und wo keine mehr hatte, hing gar keine Fahne. Die Unabhängigen zählten für niemanden. Kurz vor Mitternacht wurde Velda, die Einzige, die die ersten Hochrechnungen kannte, tot in ihrer Amtsstube gefunden, neben einem Sekretär; außer ihrem Mörder war niemand bei ihr im Raum gewesen.
