Au sud, la grève descend vers la mer en quatre bandes : au plus près de l’eau le Haut-fond, puis les Moulières, puis la Laisse, et tout en haut les Galets sous les Cabanes à filets. La nuit de la grande marée d’octobre, Vanora, qui tenait la seule auberge de l’île, a été retrouvée morte dans le Jardin d’herbes. La chaussée était déjà sous l’eau, donc le meurtrier était l’une des onze personnes dehors sur l’île ce soir-là : six insulaires et cinq invités de l’auberge. Personne n’a pu dire ensuite jusqu’où la marée était montée – seulement que quiconque se trouvait sur une bande submergée était dans une barque.
