La notte della marea di sizigie di ottobre Vanora, che gestiva l’unica locanda dell’isola, è stata trovata morta nel Giardino delle erbe. Il sentiero era già sott’acqua, quindi l’assassino era una delle undici persone che quella sera erano fuori sull’isola: sei isolani e cinque ospiti della locanda. Nessuno ha saputo dire poi fin dove fosse salita la marea – solo che chi si trovava su una fascia allagata era stato in una barca.
