Kurz nach Mitternacht brach die Musik mitten im Takt ab: Der Graf lag tot in der Bibliothek, neben seinem eigenen Schreibtisch niedergeschlagen. Die Tore des Palazzo wurden sofort verriegelt, und die fünfzehn Personen auf der Etage wurden einzeln verhört – hinter den Masken hatte niemand jemanden mit Sicherheit erkannt. Jeder von ihnen machte eine einzige Aussage darüber, wo er sich im Augenblick des Mordes befunden hatte, und alle sagten die Wahrheit.
