Every guest chose one colour and kept to it – domino, mask and gloves all in black or all in white – and the Count’s whim went further: on the chequered marble floor whoever wore black had to keep to the black squares and whoever wore white to the white ones, as if the whole company were pieces on a chessboard. Shortly after midnight the music stopped in the middle of a bar: the Count lay dead in the Library, struck down beside his own desk. The doors of the palazzo were barred at once and the fifteen people on the floor were questioned one by one – behind the masks nobody had recognised anybody with certainty. Each of them gave a single statement about where they had been at the moment of the murder, and all of them told the truth.
