Elke gast koos één kleur en bleef die trouw – domino, masker en handschoenen helemaal in zwart of helemaal in wit –, en de gril van de graaf ging nog verder: op de geblokte marmeren vloer moest wie zwart droeg op de zwarte vakjes blijven en wie wit droeg op de witte, alsof het hele gezelschap stukken op een schaakbord waren. Kort na middernacht hield de muziek midden in een maat op: de graaf lag dood in de Bibliotheek, neergeslagen naast zijn eigen bureau. De poorten van het palazzo werden meteen gegrendeld en de vijftien mensen op de verdieping werden een voor een verhoord – achter de maskers had niemand iemand met zekerheid herkend. Ieder van hen legde één enkele verklaring af over waar hij of zij zich op het moment van de moord bevond, en allemaal spraken ze de waarheid.
