Cada convidado escolheu uma cor e manteve-se fiel a ela – dominó, máscara e luvas todos em preto ou todos em branco –, e o capricho do conde ia ainda mais longe: no chão de mármore axadrezado, quem vestia de preto tinha de ficar nas casas pretas e quem vestia de branco nas brancas, como se toda a companhia fosse um conjunto de peças num tabuleiro de xadrez. Pouco depois da meia-noite a música parou a meio de um compasso: o conde jazia morto na Biblioteca, abatido junto à sua própria secretária. As portas do palazzo foram logo trancadas e as quinze pessoas do andar foram interrogadas uma a uma – atrás das máscaras, ninguém tinha reconhecido ninguém com certeza. Cada uma fez uma única declaração sobre onde estava no momento do assassinato, e todas disseram a verdade.
