Toen het gebeurde, riep iemand „Ongeluk!”, en de kreet ging van kamer tot kamer, doorgegeven door iedereen die er was om hem te horen, want de grot slikt elk geluid op dat niemand verder draagt. Een deel van de toeristen, de gidsen en de grotonderzoekers hoorde hem; de anderen, afgesneden door een lege kamer, vernamen het pas later. Vijftien mensen waren behalve Vidor in de grot, één per rij en één per kolom, en precies drie van de veertien kamers waren leeg.
