Vidor, o chefe da expedição, foi à frente até à Sala do Lago verificar os barcos – e foi encontrado aí, prostrado ao lado da água. Quando aconteceu, alguém gritou «Acidente!», e o grito passou de sala em sala, repetido por quem lá estivesse para o ouvir, pois a caverna engole todo o som que ninguém leva mais longe. Alguns dos turistas, dos guias e dos espeleólogos ouviram-no; os outros, cortados por uma sala vazia, só souberam mais tarde. Quinze pessoas estavam na caverna além de Vidor, uma por linha e uma por coluna, e exatamente três das catorze salas estavam vazias.
