Kurz vor Mitternacht wird Vasily, der Gesandte des Zaren, tot im Kabinett des Kanzlers gefunden, neben dem Schreibtisch niedergeschlagen. Die Türen werden sofort verschlossen und die fünfzehn Personen auf dem Stockwerk werden einzeln verhört; jeder von ihnen sagt wahrheitsgemäß, wo er im Moment des Mordes war – und das Protokoll, beteuern alle, sei buchstabengetreu eingehalten worden.
