As abelhas estavam inquietas com o calor e ninguém queria acotovelar-se junto de uma colmeia: no momento do assassinato havia exatamente uma pessoa ao lado de cada uma das três colmeias. Ao fim da tarde, Vinzenz, o velho apicultor que criava abelhas ali havia cinquenta anos, foi encontrado morto no celeiro, ao lado da carroça carregada de quadros de mel. Estavam oito pessoas na quinta: os quatro apicultores e quatro visitantes do dia aberto. Um deles é o assassino.
