De la răsărit, centrifuga bâzâia în casa mierii, vizitatorii se plimbaseră printre stupii din livadă și de pe pajiște, iar toată ferma mirosea a ceară caldă și a miere de tei. Albinele erau neliniștite din cauza căldurii și nimeni nu voia să se înghesuie lângă un stup: în momentul crimei se afla exact o persoană lângă fiecare dintre cei trei stupi. Spre seară, Vinzenz, bătrânul apicultor care crescuse aici albine timp de cincizeci de ani, a fost găsit mort în hambar, lângă căruța încărcată cu rame de miere. Opt persoane se aflau la fermă: cei patru apicultori și patru vizitatori ai zilei porților deschise. Unul dintre ei este ucigașul.
