Die Hunde des Hauses kannten ihre Leute und bellten nur Fremde an: neben jedem bellenden Hund war ein Jagdgast, und neben den stillen Hunden war keiner. Kurz vor dem Abendessen wurde Volkmar, der Herr des Schlosses, tot im Trophäenzimmer gefunden, zwischen seinen Pokalen und Geweihen, neben seinem eigenen alten Hund – der den ganzen Abend keinen Laut von sich gegeben hatte. Neun Personen waren im Schloss: drei aus der Familie, zwei vom Personal und vier Gäste der Jagd. Einer von ihnen ist der Mörder.
