Vajk, l’agent d’hisenda, havia vingut a trobar l’alambí; al migdia jeia mort al Paller, al costat de l’escala de mà del fenc. A la masia hi havia onze persones: els quatre amfitrions, quatre veïns i tres viatgers que s’havien aturat per un dia. Ningú no admet haver estat a prop de l’alambí de coure – així que qui era a la Destil·leria va mentir en totes les frases, i exactament tres persones hi eren. Els mentiders només amaguen l’aiguardent: l’assassí no era a la Destil·leria i va dir la veritat.
