Vajk, le douanier, était venu trouver l’alambic ; à midi, il gisait mort dans la Grange, à côté de l’échelle du fenil. Onze personnes se trouvaient à la ferme : les quatre hôtes, quatre voisins et trois voyageurs qui s’étaient arrêtés pour la journée. Personne n’avoue s’être approché de l’alambic – donc quiconque était à la Distillerie a menti dans chaque phrase, et exactement trois personnes s’y trouvaient. Les menteurs ne cachent que l’eau-de-vie : le meurtrier n’était pas à la Distillerie et a dit la vérité.
