Vajk, vameșul, venise să găsească distileria; la prânz zăcea mort în Hambar, lângă scara podului cu fân. Unsprezece persoane se aflau în gospodărie: cele patru gazde, patru vecini și trei călători care se opriseră pentru o zi. Nimeni nu recunoaște că a fost lângă cazanul de cupru – deci oricine a fost în Distilerie a mințit în fiecare propoziție, și exact trei persoane au fost acolo. Mincinoșii ascund doar țuica: ucigașul nu a fost în Distilerie și a spus adevărul.
