În seara aceea erau afară patru patinatori – un jucător de hochei, o patinatoare artistică, un patinator de viteză și un începător –, iar cei trei ajutoare ai lui Villő, responsabilul cu gheața, angajata de la închirierea de patine și vânzătoarea de vin fiert, se aflau undeva în jurul iazului. Villő însăși intrase să alimenteze soba. Când patinatorii au intrat înghețați, o oră mai târziu, cabana era rece și întunecată, iar proprietara zăcea moartă lângă sobă.
