The Backyard Barbecue

A Brisbane backyard · Saturday afternoon · the snags never came off the grill · Difficulty: Rookie 2 · 6×6

A Saturday afternoon barbecue in a Brisbane backyard: sausages on the grill, an esky full of cold drinks, and for once the neighbours came over the fence too. Vern, who had been turning the snags since lunch, was found dead before the meat was even done.

Rules

  1. Every row and every column holds exactly one person. As soon as you place someone, cross out their whole row and column.
  2. “Beside” = directly left, right, above or below, and in the same area. Squares with objects (the counter, the sink, the table, the charcoal grill, the cooler box, the trees, the flower bed and the wheelbarrow) cannot be occupied; the bar stool, the bench and the deckchairs can.
  3. The murderer was alone with the victim: nobody else was in that area.

Statements

  • Ashleigh (a nurse, Vern's daughter): She was beside a deckchair.
  • Brayden (an electrician, Ashleigh's husband): He was sitting on the bar stool.
  • Cassidy (a swimming coach from next door): She was in the last column.
  • Dale (a postman from over the back fence): He was in the Garden Shed.
  • Ellie (a primary school teacher from across the street): She was not beside a deckchair. She was in the last row.
  • Vern (a retired plumber, the host): The victim. He was found on the Patio, beside the charcoal grill – alone with the murderer.
