Campsite Rules
A campsite on Lake Balaton · an August night in 1984 · nobody sets foot on another’s plot · Difficulty: Inspector 7 · 10×10
Lake Balaton, an August night in 1984, at a small campsite on the shore. Five regulars rent the same plot every summer, each plot is known by its owner’s name, and the campsite has one rule that nobody breaks: you do not set foot on someone else’s plot unless its owner is there too. Shortly after midnight Valdemár, who changed Deutschmarks into forints for half the campsite, was found dead in a boat at the Jetty. Nine people were still out: the five plot owners and four locals. One of them is the killer. Read every statement, find everyone’s square on the plan and unmask the murderer – alone with Valdemár on the Jetty.
Rules
- Nobody was on someone else’s plot unless its owner was there too.
- Every row and every column holds exactly one person. As soon as you place someone, cross out their whole row and column.
- “Beside” = directly left, right, above or below, and in the same area. Squares with objects (the tents, the caravans, the trees, the bicycles, the cool boxes, the shower, the sink, the counter, the barrels, the parasol, the campfire, the reeds and the lamp) cannot be occupied; the Trabant, the deckchairs, the hammock, the bar stool, the boats and the bench can.
- The murderer was alone with the victim: nobody else was in that area.
Statements
- Annelie (a teacher from Leipzig): A barrel was somewhere in her column.
- Bernd (a caravanner from Munich): He was on the bench, on the bar stool, in a deckchair, in the hammock, in a boat or in the Trabant.
- Csaba (an engineer from Budapest): There was exactly one other person in his area.
- Dörte (a nurse from Dresden): She was not in a corner of her area.
- Erzsébet (a widow from Pest): A tent was somewhere in her row.
- Fanni (the buffet waitress): She was beside the Trabant, and so was another woman.
- Géza (the campsite warden): The campfire was somewhere in his column.
- Heinz (a night angler): He was with Géza.
- Irén (the lifeguard): There was no man in her area.
- Valdemár (the money changer): The victim. He was found on the Jetty, in a boat – alone with the murderer.
