The Husky Yard

A sled-dog kennel on a frozen lake · dusk · no light came on in the cabin · Difficulty: Detective 5 · 8×8

Vilja's husky yard lies on the shore of a frozen lake, and at dusk the dogs howl to be fed. That evening four mushers were seeing to the dogs and the sleds before the night tour, and three guests had arrived to try a ride – a photographer, a tourist from the city and a vet on holiday. Vilja went into the cabin to stoke the stove; the guests were to warm up there before setting off. The light in the cabin window never came on, and when Aino went to look, she found the owner dead by the stove. Fresh snow had covered every track, so the mushers and the guests had to tell where they had been.

Rules

  1. Every row and every column holds exactly one person. As soon as you place someone, cross out their whole row and column.
  2. “Beside” = directly left, right, above or below, and in the same area. Squares with objects (the fir trees, the huskies, the doghouse, the cool box, the water trough, the stove, the lantern, the table, the campfire and the woodpiles) cannot be occupied; the dog sleds, the bench, the bed and the snowmobile can.
  3. Directions refer to rows and columns, not to the same line: “exactly one row north of him was a woman” = the person in the row directly above is a woman, in any column.
  4. The murderer was alone with the victim: nobody else was in that area.

Statements

  • Aino (lead musher): A husky was somewhere in her row. Exactly one row north of her was a woman.
  • Birger (musher and dog trainer): Somebody else in his area was beside a husky. He was not beside a husky.
  • Cecilie (apprentice musher): She was the only woman beside a husky.
  • Dagfinn (musher and handyman): He was with Gudrun.
  • Eira (a photographer): She was not on the Trail.
  • Fridtjof (a tourist from the city): A fir tree was somewhere in his column.
  • Gudrun (a veterinarian on holiday): She was sitting on the bench. She was alone with somebody sitting on the snowmobile.
  • Vilja (owner of the kennel): The victim. She was found in the Cabin, beside the stove – alone with the murderer.
