The Maths Lesson
A primary school · open day · the inspector never wrote his report · Difficulty: Officer 3 · 8×8
It was open day at the primary school on Hársfa Street: parents could sit in on any lesson, and this year even the school inspector came. Viktor had a notebook full of remarks and a reputation for finding fault with everything – the chalk triangle on the blackboard, the worn gym mats, the coffee in the Staff Room. When the bell rang at the end of the long break, the inspector did not turn up for the third lesson: he was found dead in the Staff Room. Three parents and four members of the school staff were still in the building, and each of them was asked where they had been.
Rules
- Every row and every column holds exactly one person. As soon as you place someone, cross out their whole row and column.
- “Beside” = directly left, right, above or below, and in the same area. Squares with objects (the blackboard, the lockers, the desks, the bookcases, the plant, the espresso machine, the trophy, the table, the ball basket and the climbing wall) cannot be occupied; the chairs, the armchair, the benches, the gym mats and the sofa can.
- The murderer was alone with the victim: nobody else was in that area.
Statements
- Attila (father of a fourth-grader): He was in the last row.
- Bori (mother of a first-grader): She was in a corner of her area.
- Csilla (mother of a sixth-grader): She was beside a desk. She was not beside a bookcase.
- Dávid (deputy head): The ball basket was somewhere in his column. A desk was somewhere in his area.
- Eszter (school secretary): She was the only one beside a bench.
- Feri (PE teacher): He was the only one sitting in a chair.
- Ildikó (maths teacher): She was the only woman beside the blackboard.
- Viktor (school inspector): The victim. He was found in the Staff Room – alone with the murderer.
