The Mountain Hut
Eagle’s Rest hut · a snowstorm · the night is long · Difficulty: Detective 5 · 8×8
A snowstorm has cut off the Eagle’s Rest mountain hut for the night. Seven guests and staff sit out the storm by the stove – and when the warden, Valdemar, goes to fetch dry boots from the Drying Room, he does not come back: he is found dead among the skis. Seven people were in the hut: four hikers and three members of staff. One of them is the killer. Read every statement, find everyone’s square on the floor plan and unmask the murderer – alone with Valdemar in the Drying Room.
Rules
- Every row and every column holds exactly one person. As soon as you place someone, cross out their whole row and column.
- “Beside” = directly left, right, above or below, and in the same area. Squares with objects (the stove, tables, the locker, skis, boots…) cannot be occupied; the bunks, the benches, the armchair and the stool can. A corner of an area is a square of that area with two outer sides.
- Directions refer to rows and columns, not to the same line: “north of Gisela” = in a row further up, in any column; “exactly one row north of him was a man” = the person in the row directly above is a man, in any column.
- The murderer was alone with the victim: nobody else was in that area.
Statements
- Anton (hiker): He was sitting on a bench.
- Berta (hiker): There was a man in her area.
- Corbinian (climber): He was beside the drying rack, in a corner of his area.
- Dagmar (birdwatcher): She was in a corner of her area.
- Erika (cook): She was beside the stool. She was north of Gisela.
- Fritz (mountain guide): He was beside a bench. Exactly one row north of him was a man.
- Gisela (ski instructor): She was in the Kitchen.
- Valdemar (hut warden): The victim. He was found in the Drying Room – alone with the murderer.
