The Final Table
Ace of Clubs poker room · final night · the prize money · Difficulty: Inspector 7 · 10×10
Final night of the Harbour Open at the Ace of Clubs poker room. The final table is set, the trophy stands on the stage and the prize money is locked in the office safe – until Vaughn, the tournament director, is found dead in the Office, beside that very safe. Nine people were still in the club: four players, three members of staff and two from the press. One of them is the killer. Read every statement, find everyone’s square on the floor plan and unmask the murderer – alone with Vaughn in the Office.
Rules
- No area was empty: every one of the eight areas held at least one person.
- Exactly three people were sitting on chairs (the armchair does not count as a chair).
- Every row and every column holds exactly one person. As soon as you place someone, cross out their whole row and column.
- “Beside” = directly left, right, above or below, and in the same area. Squares with objects (poker tables, counters, the safe, the trophy, the chip trolley, screens…) cannot be occupied; the chairs, the bar stools, the benches, the sofa and the armchair can.
- Directions refer to rows and columns, not to the same line: “exactly one row north of him was a woman” = the person in the row directly above is a woman, in any column; “north of Amelia” = in a row further up, in any column.
- The murderer was alone with the victim: nobody else was in that area.
Statements

- Fleur (floor manager): She was beside a parasol. She was alone in her area.

- Hyacinth (commentator): She was not sitting in the armchair. Exactly one row north of her was a male player.
- Ida (reporter): She was in a corner of her area.
- Vaughn (the tournament director): The victim. He was found in the Office, beside the safe – alone with the murderer.
