Skyscrapers

A miniature park · an evening light test · ten towers, one workshop · Difficulty: Chief 9 · 12×12

A miniature park on the edge of Istanbul, the “Towers of the World” section, late September. The park has closed, but the floodlights of the ten skyscraper models are being tested, so the model-makers, three park staff and four visitors are still out on the plots. The park is darkened for the test – and when the lights come up, Volkan, the chief model-maker, is found dead. The show was called off.

Rules

  1. Exactly one person was in each skyscraper area.
  2. Every row and every column holds exactly one person. As soon as you place someone, cross out their whole row and column.
  3. “Beside” = directly left, right, above or below, and in the same area. Squares with objects (the ten models, the trees, the signs, the lamps, the fountain, the vending machine, the ticket booth, the bollards, the table, the shelf, the crate) cannot be occupied; the benches and the stools can. A corner of an area is a square of it that faces outwards (another area or the edge of the board) on a horizontal and on a vertical side.
  4. Directions refer to rows, not to the same column: “exactly one row north of her was a man of the park staff” = the person in the row directly above is a man of the park staff, in any column.
  5. “A sign was somewhere in her column” = a sign is on one of the squares of her column, in any area; “a bench was somewhere in her area” = on a square of the area she was in. The “first row” is row 1, the “last column” is column 12.
  6. The murderer was alone with the victim: nobody else was in that area.
