Science Stand-Up Night
A club cellar · a science stand-up night · the host never announced the last talk · Difficulty: Detective 5 · 8×8
Once a month the cellar club in the old town hosts a science stand-up night: three speakers, twenty minutes each, and a microphone that has heard more equations than jokes. Tonight's programme was three talks – Anna's “Everyone Is Happy Differently”, Csaba's “Intelligence and Creativity” and Bence's “The Psychology of Faith”. After the second talk the spotlight swung away from the podium, the sound engineer put on some music and the bartender opened a fresh barrel, while Vica, the host, slipped off to the green room to fetch her cards for the last talk. She never came back to the microphone: she was found beside the dressing table. The three speakers, the two crew members and the two members of the audience who had stayed for the whole evening were all asked where they had been. This case is dedicated to László Mérő.
Rules
- Every row and every column holds exactly one person. As soon as you place someone, cross out their whole row and column.
- “Beside” = directly left, right, above or below, and in the same area. Squares with objects (the dressing table, the projection screen, the espresso machine, the spotlight, the microphone, the counter, the wardrobe, the bistro tables, the camera, the barrel, the mixing desk and the loudspeaker) cannot be occupied; the sofa, the chairs, the bar stools and the podium can.
- Directions refer to rows and columns, not to the same line: “exactly one row north of him was a woman” = the person in the row directly above is a woman, in any column.
- The murderer was alone with the victim: nobody else was in that area.
Statements
- Anna (happiness researcher – “Everyone Is Happy Differently”): Exactly one row north of her was a woman.
- Bence (psychologist – “The Psychology of Faith”): He was the only one beside a chair. A bar stool was somewhere in his column.
- Csaba (mathematician – “Intelligence and Creativity”): The microphone was somewhere in his row.
- Delila (sound engineer): She was in the first column.
- Endre (bartender): He was the only man beside the barrel.
- Fanni (a university student): A bistro table was somewhere in her column. She was not on the Stage.
- Gábor (a regular of the club): The podium was somewhere in his column. Exactly one person was sitting in a chair – not him, but somebody in his area.
- Vica (host of the evening): The victim. She was found in the Green Room, beside the dressing table – alone with the murderer.
