Sunday Night Pizza
Naples, Sunday night · a family pizzeria in the old town · last orders and an unpaid flour bill · Difficulty: Officer 3 · 6×6
Naples old town, a small family pizzeria on Via dei Tribunali, late on a Sunday evening. Valentino, the flour supplier, came to settle his bill and said, loudly enough for the terrace to hear, that someone was passing on his flour sacks behind the family’s back. Half an hour later his scooter still stood beside the terrace, but he had vanished. Valentino was found dead. The bill stayed unpaid.
Rules
- Every row and every column holds exactly one person. As soon as you place someone, cross out their whole row and column.
- “Beside” = directly left, right, above or below, and in the same area. Squares with objects (the parasol, the tables, the counter, the crate, the shelf, the pizza box, the sink and the oven) cannot be occupied; the bench, the chair and the stool can.
- Directions refer to rows and columns, not to the same line: “exactly one row north of him was a guest” = the person in the row directly above was a guest, in any column; “the northernmost person in her area” = nobody else in her area was in a row further up.
- The murderer was alone with the victim: nobody else was in that area. The victim made no statement – his square, too, follows from the others’.
Statements
- Assunta (owner): The sink was somewhere in her column. She was not in the Dining Room.
- Brunella (waitress, the owner’s daughter): She was beside the stool.
- Ciro (pizzaiolo, the owner’s nephew): He was not in a corner of his area.
- Doriana (guest): Exactly one row north of her was a woman.
- Ettore (guest): He was beside the chair.
- Valentino (flour supplier): The victim. He was alone with the murderer.
